There are many different types of vapes flooding the market today. It would be impossible to pinpoint the exact number of vaporizers there are. By grouping these little devices together, you will get a good feel for what kind of vapes are popular today.
Two Main Types of Vapes: E-cigs and Mods
The first e-cig ever created looked a lot like a cigarette. It was literally made to be an electronic cigarette, nothing more. Eventually people wanted more than these little ecigs or “cigalikes” had to offer. This desire gave birth to the “mod.” What mod technically means is a modified e-cigarette. So even though the original mods were literally modified e-cigs, the term grew to mean any vape that wasn’t an e-cig. This may seem a little weird but it makes sense when you really think about it. If you were to make a mod today, you’re not going to reinvent the basic mechanics of vaping. You’re going to build off the original e-cig invention. So even though today’s mods are not modified cigalikes, they still spring forth from the original e-cig invention. I guess you can say they evolved from e-cigs. I bet that’s where Evolv Vapor got their name from.
E-cigs aka Cigalikes
A cigalike is a vaporizer that is designed to look and feel like a cigarette. These are good for tricking your body into thinking that it’s smoking when it’s not. Some people find it easier to use a device that mimics a cigarette. That is one of the huge draws to e-cigs. Holding a brick is a lot less appealing to some people, no matter how powerful it is.
One of the best things about cigalikes is that they don’t have to be refilled. Refilling mods can be a messy endeavor. There isn’t a single vaper alive who hasn’t spilled enough vape juice to fill up a 60mL bottle or two. Between spillage and leakage, we’ve all wasted a lot of juice. With e-cigs, you don’t have to worry about any of that. Not only do they not need to be refilled but they don’t leak either. These devices are what we call, “closed systems.” That means the mechanism that handles vaporizing the juice is closed off. It can’t be refilled and it also can’t leak. In order to leak it would need to have access to the open air, which would be an open system.
The biggest drawback to ecigs would be the lack of power and limited flavor options. E-cigs take cartridges which means you can’t just fill them with your flavor of choice. You can only use the cartridges that the company sells which will be limited to a few flavors. On the bright side, many vapers find these flavors to be sufficient. You won’t try most of the flavors on the market anyway. You just need a few good flavors to have a good rotation.
Everything under the sun that isn’t a cigalike is technically a mod. The most popular style of mods are vape pens and box mods. I consider a vape pen to be any vaporizer that similar to a cylinder in shape. Some will be perfectly round and others may be a tad boxier, but if it’s similar to a pen in dimensions then I consider it a vape pen. The tricky part is that most people don’t call them mods. They’re usually called vape pens, starter pens, ego devices, etc. Few people refer to them as mods, but they are a type of mod.
Usually, when someone uses the word, “mod,” they’re referring to a box mod. These devices have a rectangular shape and are usually not much taller than they are wide, unlike starter pens. Box mods are more advanced because they require you to have a basic working knowledge of electricity (Ohm’s Law) and battery safety. These are two things you don’t want to have to worry about learning when you’re trying to switch from cigarettes to vaping. For that reason, most people start off with an e-cig or a starter pen.
Box mods are very powerful and can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Don’t rush and get a box mod. Take your time and master the craft with a simpler device.
